Well everyone is gearing up for GenCon, that's the plan for this weekend. For as much that GenCon is in the 'news' (blogs and twitter) those not going might feel a little left behind. Not to worry, I've come up with a great list of 5 things you can be doing this weekend instead of going to GenCon.
Number 5 - Be there in spirit
Follow #GenCon on twitter, don't have twitter and don't want to sign up, that's fine we have you covered here http://search.twitter.com/. just punch in the hash tag and your off. You'll get a chance to see pictures and hear about the games going on. Also follow blogs and check out other bloggers Facebook page as it seems everyone is going to be live blogging the event. I recommend creating a new column in tweet deck if you do have an account.
Number 4 - Movie Night
Get the rest of the players together and have a movie night, be it out at the movies or a bunch of classics at home. The new GI Joe movie is a fun action movie to go see, crank is another good one. You can't go wrong with Conan or Wizard. Pick something everyone wanted to see but never got around to it. In keeping with the geek/con theme i would have a double feature, first role models followed up by fan boys.
Number 3 - Bust out those magic cards
Its probably been a while since you've had a chance to play magic, or you play all the time or you never played. Head down to your local gaming store and pickup a cheap starter set of the latest edition and give it a whirl. Its always fun to see how crazy the system has gotten since the last time I've played, makes me wonder if the same thing will happen to 4e. Also use some of your favorite magic cards as inspiration for monsters and new attack powers.
Number 2 - Game Time
Have a system gaming night, or bust out a good old fashion board game like risk. You might not have all your players for a regular campaign but you can probably get away with a board game. I recommend trying a new game, perhaps Zombies.
And the number 1 thing to do while not going to GenCon
Go camping and role play in the woods
Its classic, what d&d geek has not talked about this idea to his friends. Well its a great summer to do it, and sometimes you just need to put a plan in action before people will sign on. Think of chill or another horror rpg. Home brew a Blair witch game, it will be corny but creepy.
Well these should give you some ideas of what to do this weekend while everyone else is at GenCon.
Until next time, keep your dice on the table.
