Here is another one shot adventure idea that i tried to run but did not have enough players. Its extremely fast to get organized and does not require a lot of resources. The idea puts the players in Kobold shoes, they get to play kobolds for the night. You can run the entire adventure with a monster manual 1 book and a few dice.
Step one is to get the monsters ready, if your using the Adventure Tools or the Compendium then great, this will give you some better prep. Lets assume because its a one shot night you don't have a full party so lets go with 3 players. Print off one copy of the Kobold Dragonshield, One copy of the Kobold Pikeman, and and one copy of the Kobold Piker. They are all level 2 monsters.
Set the monster down on a pile face down in the center of the table, and have the players pick randomly. Inform the players that they still have second wind and they should just do the math.
So now what kind of adventure would kobolds have. The answer is lots of tasks oriented ones for sure.
The basis behind the adventure is the Kobold Wyrmpriest who looks after the tribe has asked the group to complete a series of tasks. Perhaps he says they were chosen, perhaps they got in trouble with something and this is punishment.
Make sure you add your own, but by listing different tasks you can have players decide whic
h one they want to do first. A standard encounter would roughly have a xp budget of 750, but considering the players are now monsters i would make it 300.
Infestation {500xp}
The store room of the cave has been infested by Ankheg, the longer they are there the more food they eat and the tribe needs that food for the harsh winter season that is coming. I recommend using the large cave tile from caves of carnage, and running 1x Ankheg, 4x Ankheg Broodling, and 1x Ankheg Brodling at level 1. Be sure to spread them out and let the players try to be sneaky and get them clear.
Bonus: Should the players save some Ankheg eggs, the Wyrmpriest will be rewarded extra.
Waring Tribe {300xp}
Your tribe has been at odds with a nearby goblin tribe for some time, the Wyrmpriest says his divination has revealed a hunting party not to far from here. Go and teach them a lesson. This is a simple combat encounter, stick with the woods. Have plenty of trees, bushes, rocks. 1x goblin blackblade, 1x goblin warrior, and 4x goblin cutters.
Teach the goblins a Lesson {400}{400}
Have this one come up after the warring tribe, but not directly after. While the players were out performing another task the goblins came and insulted the kobolds by hanging dead lizards on sticks with bird wings around the camp. The Wyrmpriest wants the players to go to a nearby cave and capture 4 fire beetles, and while they are unconscious sneak into the goblin camp and let them lose. Players should find this one rather fun, and it is a two encounter task. The second part should be simple mini skill challenge. two hide rolls for each player to get in there. 8x goblin cutters will try and follow the kobolds but that should be easy enough to deal with.
Bandits {550}
A group of human bandits have been invading your turf and robing the people you normally rob. take some Kobold Minions (2 per player) and put a stop to them. This one is extra fun, because the players get to use minions as well, this will be a challenge to keep them alive. Each player should roll initiative twice, once for the kobold they are playing, and one for the two minions. The thieves consist of 1x bandit leader, 2x human soldiers, 4x human rabble, and 4x human thugs. Its a large group but the players should be able to handle it with the use of the minions.
Ending the adventure can be simple of they die, or you can have a feast in their honor when they have completed all the tasks. Over all its a simple fun idea that you can easily run in a night.
Until next time keep those dice on the table.
I have to say this is a neat idea for a 'fun' game session, and break up the normal routine of the regular campaign.
ReplyDeleteAlso, it could serve as a wacky intro to D&D, as it gives the players a good sense of the combat mechanics without overwhelming them with power options. It also stresses how each player has the same base actions during combat, just different abilities. So a bunch of new players could quickly grasp action types, maneuverability, and learning to work together using assist and flanking.
Neat idea here.
Thanks for the idea! This is something I'm definitely going to try in the future. Just print out the stat blocks for the players and go with it.
ReplyDeleteInstant PWN and WIN in a bag!
Awesome, I LOVE IT....Im going to have to try this as well. Would you do it with a full party. Just mix it in for a special night?
ReplyDeleteyeah each player would be a kobold from the monster manual. The idea behind these is that your group asked you to run a game and you really didn't have anything planned.
