The Re spec Rule: Rebuiding from the ground up.

Another smaller post for me today, this is a house rule i have implemented in my campaign and the players run it. We all know that in 4e you can change a feat, power, skill out every time you level up, and many players love this.

However due to the time it takes to run a full length campaign and the frequency of the updates to 4e i have allowed players to re spec their character every time they hit a new teir.
You can change the frequency to meet your own needs, or make it a ritual requiring some sort of xp debt system.

In any case its a simple rule, the player keeps name, race, starting abilities, backgrounds and languages, and can rebuild the rest from scratch. Players can exchange magic items of equal or lower level values. Another option is they can keep their starting ability scores but re-arrange them.

The thought behind this is again that every month more updates are being added to the system via dragon magazine and a new source book. My party spent 1 year getting to paragon level. It allows the player to redefine his character, and still not totally bunk up your campaign with inconsistencies.

Until next time, keep your dice on the table

  1. I'd be a little hesitant allowing things to be scrambled every level. As you pointed out, making it associated with a ritual or a small adventure might be a neat way to go (I'd lean towards a solo adventure session).

One house rule I have is after level one, my players have a one-time shot to freely scramble all the powers, feats, and skills they want. After that, they are back to retraining as per the rulebook.

I like to be a little lenient for the level one characters as you get so many defining powers right from the start. You make a bad choice and you are stuck with it for a long time.

The reason i came up with the rule, is because my group started my campaign when 4e came out, and only hit paragon in june of 09. The game had changed so much since its release i felt the players needed it.

That being said they only changed one or two things out.

I recommend only using the rule either every tier, or every 5 levels.
