How to use party initiative

The idea behind party initiative is not new by any means, however i believe I've stumbled on a perfect use for it instead of players all going at the same time.

Before combat begins you as the dm sets up a scene, you place the map out, have the players put down their miniatures in the starting area and then what? Well normally combat, but the idea behind a scene is that the events might not end up as combat, but the players position might be important.

A example of this is a trapped area of the road, the players will keep expecting that first fight but nothing happens.

Group Initiative
Have players roll up initiative as normal
Take the average of that, and consider this is when the party goes
Each player can in turn move their speed, all of this movement takes place on the group initiative.

What i mean by this is if the 3rd player triggers a trap don't stop, continue until all players have made their move, then trigger the events. This could be something as simple as traps, or the hidden monsters jumped out and attacked.

In any chase, if combat begins initiative returns to normal.

Its a small idea, but just may prove useful

Until next time, keep your dice on the table

  1. Good advice. I hate how "roll initiative" puts everyone in a combat mood and makes them forget that they have other ways to resolve situations.

    Thanks!
