RE: 10 foot pole

The other day i was reading a post by 6d6fireball on what happen to the 10 foot pole? The post was brief and to the point and posed the the question.

I agree that it existed in 3.5 however the system did not seem to allow rules for it, however i believe it can exist in 4e. In my opinion 4e creates a rule on allowing items that have no rules for it, this in itself is a great bonus allowing DMs to quickly say yes to players and letting people just run with the game.

Without further adieu here is the 4e 10 foot pole
10' pole: The pole is often used to determine the stability of a floor and identify possible traps. Using the pole grants a +2 bonus to a players passive perception to notice a floor based trap. Blinded characters only suffer a -5 penalty to Perception checks while using a 10' pole.
Floor based traps can be pits, can be wall traps with pressure plates, can be electrified floors.

For the most part its a very basic item, it follows the 4e rules of giving a simple +2 bonus. The item can be used at any level.

the idea here isn't to give rules to an item few people will want, the idea here is behind a General Item, any item the player wants, why not say yes and give them a +2 item bonus. They can't pile up stacking items, but it makes the players happy.

As DMs we all know the more happy a player is while adventuring, the sweeter victory tasts when we rip out their hearts! bwuhahaha... ackem.

Anyway, thats it for me for today, until next time keep your dice on the table.
(does anyone even know what this is based off of?)

  1. Sweet! Simple and totally in keeping with 4e philosophy!

  2. A great example of the flexibility of 4ED. I'd consider giving the pole a +2 bonus to dungeonering, and throw a +2 bonus for active perception checks against floor-based traps.

I'd figure a pole would be great for determining thickness of walls and doors, stability of a floor, ceiling, or rickity bridge.

Still I think the concept you have of 'Say Yes' is a solid DM philosophy.

  3. Now if we can only get a 10 ft poll that is collapsible so it can be carried around more easily we’d really be in business. That or wait to get yourself a 10 ft poll until after you’ve acquired a bag of holding.
